Kaggle@ICLR 2023: ML Solutions in Africa
Julia Elliott · Walter Reade · Ray Harvey · Phil Culliton
MH3
Kaggle will be hosting its first workshop at The Eleventh International Conference on Learning Representations ICLR in Kigali, Rwanda on May 4, 2023. This workshop will be centered around using machine learning to help address societal challenges in Africa, and is uniquely aimed at early-to-mid career data scientists and ML researchers. It will also feature a live hackathon hosted in partnership with Zindi.
- Learn from talks by data scientists and researchers doing impactful ML work on prevalent issues in Africa.
- Participate in a live competition (in-person only). Top-ranked finishers in the competition will earn prizes!
- Connect with other early-to-mid-career data scientists and network with advanced ML researchers.
- Meet the Kaggle & Zindi teams: Julia Elliott (Kaggle COO), Walter Reade (Kaggle Competitions Data Scientist), and Amy Bray (Zindi Africa Data Scientist) will be facilitating the workshop in partnership with Zindi and hosting the competition.

SlidesLive Video The ability to accurately monitor carbon emissions is a critical step in the fight against climate change. Precise carbon readings allow researchers and governments to understand the sources and patterns of carbon mass output. While Europe and North America have extensive systems in place to monitor carbon emissions on the ground, there are few available in Africa. The objective of this challenge is to create machine learning or a deep learning model using CO2 emissions data to predict carbon emissions. These solutions will enable governments, and other actors to estimate carbon emission levels across Africa, even in places where on-the-ground monitoring is not possible. |
